Abstract
머리말
조선시대 말, 19세기 후반에 近代西洋齒科醫學이 수입된 지 이미 한 세기를 넘어섰다.
1976년 개항 이후 격동의 舊韓末, 半世紀에 걸친 일본의 지배, 해방과 분단, 美軍政과 한국
전쟁으로 이어지는 근대사의 屈曲을 따라 한국치과의학은 몇 차례 變貌의 단계를 거쳤다.
1893년 제물포의 노다(野田)치과의원 개설이래 1945년까지의 오십 여 년은 대체로 일본치과
의학이 식민지조선에 移植되어온 과정이었다면, 해 방과 건국이후의 50년은 미국치과의학이
미군정과 한국전쟁을 계기로 일본치과의학을 밀어내고 한국치과의학의 내용을 채워온 과정
이었다. 우리 나라 보건의료가 그랬듯이 치과의료분야가 겪은 두 차례의 역사적 전환점도
역시 日帝强占期과 美軍政期였던 것이다. 21세기를 눈앞에 둔 한국치과의학은 새로운 100년
을 준비해야 한다. 사회 모든 영역에서 개혁과 구조조정을 요구하고 있는 지금, 한국치과의
학의 座標를 어떻게 세워야 할 것인가? 지나간 역사는 오늘의 문제를 명확하게 해줄 뿐 아
니라 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 제시한다. 바로 그러한 의미에서 조선시대 말에서 한일합방에
이르는 시기에 이 땅에 근대서양치과의학의 原型을 移植했던 일본인 치과의사들의 발자취를
살펴보려 한다.

After the Treaty of Kangwha with Japan in 1976, Korea was exposed to modern
western dentistry around the 19th century. The introduction of western dentistry into
Korea can be explained in the context of the changing international relations at that
time. Japan began to emerge East Asia as the most powerful state defeating China and
Russia in 1895 and 1905 respectively. Noda Ooji, a Japanese dentist established a dental
clinic in Inchon in 1893. This is regarded as the first westernized dental office in Korea

Dentistry in General Hospitals since 1904 they emoted common interests among them or
In addition Japanese Ib-Chi-Sa(入齒師), unlicensed dental practitioners, outnumbered
regular dental practitioners. Having teamed dental knowledge and techniques as
assistants to Japanese, K[gem Ib-Chi-Sa(s) were legally permitted to practice by the
police office of local government since 1907. They were the first and transitional
generation of Korean dental practitioners until Korean dentists appeared in 1915. Modem
Korean dental practitioners depended upon Japanese dental practitioners to rear up their
embryos in the early 20th century. We need to discuss what these embryos mean 83
currently acting dentists.
